In the vibrant heart of Copenhagen, Bremen Teater awaits. It stands proudly on Nyropsgade, a beacon of entertainment and art. Bremen Teater isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Copenhagen’s rich cultural tapestry.

Bremen Teater first opened its doors in 1957, initially under a different name. It has gone through several transformations throughout the years. Initially called Mercur Theater, it hosted touring theatre companies and produced its own shows. Later, it even had a stint as a cinema for erotic films and a nightclub, thanks to its one-time owner, Simon Spies. Can you imagine this very stage hosting such diverse forms of entertainment?

The building itself, designed by Otto Frankild, houses not only the theater but also Hotel Mercur. A unique feature during Simon Spies’ ownership was a private elevator. This connected the theater to his office on the first floor and his apartment on the sixth. Spies’ era brought a unique blend of extravagance and entertainment to Bremen Teater.

In 2009, Bremen Teater was reborn. A group of Danish entertainers, including Casper Christensen, Frank Hvam, Simon Kvamm, and Niels Hausgaard, breathed new life into this historic venue. They envisioned a space “by artists, for artists.” Bremen Teater became a hub for creativity and expression. It hosts a variety of events. These include comedy shows, concerts, theater performances, talks, film screenings, and even award ceremonies.

The theater retains much of its original charm. The plush PH seats and Arne Jacobsen lamps create a unique ambiance. You can almost feel the echoes of laughter and applause from past performances. Today, Bremen Teater is more than just a venue. It is a vibrant part of Copenhagen’s cultural scene. It’s a place where history and modernity intertwine, where laughter and music fill the air, and where the spirit of Danish artistry thrives.
