“Ingeniøren Holger Hammerich” it says on the stele. Holger Hammerich was indeed an important engineer and politician. We are standing before a memorial to him. It is located at Langelinie in Copenhagen. The Holger Hammerich Stele commemorates his contributions.

Holger Hammerich was born in Copenhagen in 1845. He died in 1915. He left a significant mark on the city. He is buried in Copenhagen’s Western Cemetery. Hammerich’s work shaped Copenhagen’s infrastructure.

Hammerich did not complete his studies at the College of Advanced Technology. He studied there from 1868 to 1871. Instead, he went to the United States. He stayed there from 1871 to 1874. After his time in the USA, he returned to Denmark. He worked as an engineer for the rest of his life.

One of Hammerich’s most important contributions was to the Copenhagen rail system. He helped organize the railway. His ideas led to the establishment of the Boulevard Line. In 1885, Hammerich proposed a new railway network arrangement. His proposal received much attention from politicians and the media.

He was also deeply involved in politics. Hammerich served in the Danish Parliament from 1890 to 1915. He represented the party Højre. He played a key role in the constitutional negotiations of 1915.

Hammerich also helped establish the Freeport of Copenhagen in 1891. He collaborated with H.C.V. Møller on the master plan of the complex. Hammerich’s idea was the creation of the Langelinie Pier. It protected the new harbor basins. It also restored the recreational values of the area.

He was married to Pouline Christine Elisabeth Mølmark. They married in 1876. Together, they had several children. These included Martin Hammerich who was born in 1883 and died in 1940.

The Holger Hammerich Stele was unveiled in 1918. His friends erected it in his honor. Heinrich Wenck designed the monument. Anders Bundgaard created it. The inscription reads that Hammerich proposed the Langelinie promenade plan in 1895. The friends erected it in 1918.

Hammerichsgade is named after him. It runs along the Boulevard Line. His legacy lives on in Copenhagen’s streets.

So, as we stand here before the Holger Hammerich Stele, remember the engineer. Remember the politician. Remember the man who shaped Copenhagen.
