Beyond Jakarta’s modern veneer lies Cijantung a place with a story etched in time. Cijantung is more than just a name on a map. It is a vibrant kelurahan within Pasar Rebo in East Jakarta.

Cijantung’s story begins with a river. The area gets its name from a small tributary of the Ciliwung River. This river originates in Areman near Kelapadua.

In the mid-17th century Cijantung was a remote area. Captain Frederick H. Muller led an expedition for the Dutch East India Company. They ventured south of Meestercornelis now Jatinegara. Cornelis Senen had cleared the forests there a year prior.

Muller’s mission was to investigate reports of Mataram rebels. They also sought to find a land route used by the Banten people. This route led to Priangan through Muaraberes on the Ciliwung River.

The expedition started on November 4 1657. Muller’s force included 14 Dutch soldiers and 15 Mardijkers. Ten native guides led the way.

After three days of navigating dense forest and the Ciliwung’s edge they arrived at Cijantung. Twelve families lived here under their leader Prajawangsa.

Today Cijantung is a bustling urban area. In the past it was a dense forest during the colonial era.

Cijantung now has a population of 46764. It covers an area of 2.37 square kilometers. The postal code for Cijantung is 13770.

Cijantung is bordered by several kelurahan. Gedong is to the north. Tanjung Barat and Kampung Baru lie to the west. Susukan and Ciracas are to the east. Kalisari and Pekayon are to the south of Cijantung.

Modern Cijantung is known as the headquarters for the Indonesian Army’s elite special forces Kopassus. The area hosts many military residences. Despite its growth Cijantung retains echoes of its past. The area is densely populated. Graha Cijantung Mall stands alongside public and private schools. Apartment complexes are rising making Cijantung an ever evolving landscape.

The story of Cijantung is a reminder. Jakarta’s districts have deep roots. From a forest path to a modern hub Cijantung has transformed over centuries. It connects Jakarta’s past and present.
