Nestled in Massey, West Auckland, the Westbridge Residential School has a story to tell. Westbridge isn’t your typical school. It’s a specialized residential school catering to students aged nine to fifteen with high, complex, and neurodiverse needs. These students, each with a Specialist Education Agreement between the Ministry of Education, the school, and their whānau, typically stay at Westbridge for twelve to eighteen months. Westbridge Residential School isn’t just about academics. It’s a place where learning intertwines with wellbeing. The school employs youth workers in the hostel, alongside teachers, teacher aides, and support staff. They work together to create a holistic learning environment. In 2023, Westbridge saw a significant increase in student enrollment. The school grew from just two students at the beginning of the year to eighteen by the end. This growth presented operational challenges. During this period, an acting principal led the school, with the principal returning in Term 1, 2024, and a new deputy principal joining in Term 2, 2024. Westbridge Residential School is overseen by a Ministry of Education appointed board, established in 2014. This board also governs Halswell Residential College in Christchurch. Westbridge has a history of actively addressing challenges. In 2021, the Ministry of Education directed Westbridge to create a plan to eliminate physical restraint. This plan was in place during an ERO visit in Term 1, 2023. The school continues to prioritize strengthening practices that support positive behaviors. Westbridge Residential School focuses on several key goals. They aim to foster student achievement through teaching and learning programs aligned with the National Curriculum. These programs emphasize key competencies. Westbridge recognizes all staff as leaders in supporting children and adolescents with complex and behavioral needs. The school strives to be cost-effective, meet all students’ needs, and represent best practice. Inclusivity, cultural responsiveness, and physical and emotional safety are paramount. Westbridge also faced a concerning rise in physical assaults and property damage at the end of 2023. The board took swift action, implementing trauma-informed staff training and strengthening the school’s behavior policy and procedures. These measures led to a notable decrease in incidents by Term 1, 2024. Despite the challenges, Westbridge has notable strengths. The school effectively uses key competencies, such as managing self, participating, and contributing, as drivers of the curriculum. Classroom programs are tailored to student interests to enhance engagement. The leadership understands the importance of professional development and collective capacity building. Westbridge continues its journey of improvement. Priorities include ongoing trauma-informed training, managing roll growth with robust transition plans, consolidating recent improvements, and strengthening monitoring and evaluation processes. Westbridge Residential School, with its dedicated staff and focus on student wellbeing, is a testament to the power of specialized education in nurturing young minds.
