In 1853, a small post office opened its doors, marking the humble beginnings of Whittlesea. It was first known as Plenty, but in 1864, it was renamed Whittlesea, possibly after a town in England. Imagine Whittlesea in its early days, a hub for the timber industry. Logs from Kinglake and the surrounding region were transported by rail to Melbourne for milling. The railway, an extension of what is now the Mernda line, arrived in Whittlesea on December 23, 1889. This fueled the timber trade and brought temporary workers, leading to the establishment of several pubs in town. The timber industry shaped Whittlesea’s identity for decades. The railway, however, eventually closed in December 1959. Whittlesea faced a devastating challenge in 2009 during the Black Saturday bushfires. The town became a critical point for firefighting and relief efforts, showcasing the resilience of the community. Today, Whittlesea maintains its unique character, a blend of rural charm and proximity to Melbourne. It lies outside the Urban Growth Boundaries of the Melbourne 2030 metropolitan development plan, ensuring its distinct identity. Whittlesea boasts several attractions. Funfields Theme Park offers thrills and entertainment. The natural beauty of the Torourrong Reservoir and Yan Yean Reservoir provides a tranquil escape. Bear’s Castle and the historic courthouse, now a tourist information center, offer glimpses into the past. The town also houses Whittlesea Primary School, which dates back to 1878 and still operates in its original single stone building. Whittlesea is also home to the Whittlesea Agricultural Show, a tradition that began in 1859. This rich history, blended with modern amenities, makes Whittlesea a captivating destination.
