Perched high above the shimmering expanse of Auckland’s Mawhitipana Bay, a modern marvel nestles amongst the ancient Pōhutukawa trees. Mawhitipana Bay itself, once known as Mawitipana Bay, reveals a hidden gem where architecture dances with nature. The owners of this holiday home, drawn to the bay’s allure, sought a sanctuary that embraced the sun, the breathtaking views, and the freedom of outdoor living. They yearned for spacious decks where life could unfold under the open sky, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. Mawhitipana Bay offered the perfect canvas for their vision. The architects, MacKayCurtis, answered this call with a design that treads lightly on the land. A slender timber deck stretches across the narrow site, weaving between the venerable Pōhutukawa trees, its footprint minimized to preserve their roots and honor their presence. North-facing, it basks in the sun’s warmth and captures the panoramic vista of Mawhitipana Bay. Above this platform floats a cedar-clad timber box, a haven for sleeping and bathing. Supported by six steel columns, it seems to hover above the landscape, a testament to architectural ingenuity. Beneath, the space is enclosed in glass, creating a semi-outdoor living area that extends the deck’s embrace. This split-level design, a signature of Mawhitipana Bay’s modern masterpiece, cleverly divides the living spaces while minimizing the building’s impact. Downstairs, glass walls on all sides dissolve the barriers between indoors and out. A kitchen, living, and dining area flow seamlessly onto the east-west decks, offering a fluid transition for the inhabitants of Mawhitipana Bay. Partially embedded into the hillside, the kitchen cabinetry discreetly recedes, further enhancing the sense of openness. Upstairs, the timber box becomes a private retreat. Large cedar shutters, integrated into the rainscreen, offer a sense of enclosure, a counterpoint to the ground floor’s transparency. But these shutters conceal a secret. Behind them, full-height windows slide into hidden cavities, allowing the gentle sounds of Mawhitipana Bay to permeate the space even when the shutters are closed. The symphony of bird calls and the rhythmic lapping of waves create a tranquil soundtrack for life at Mawhitipana Bay.
