Do you hear the echoes of history whispering from these walls? We are standing before the Residencia Presidencial de Suárez y Reyes. It is more than just a building. It is the official residence of the President of Uruguay. Its story is as rich and layered as the country’s history itself.

The Residencia Presidencial de Suárez y Reyes gets its name from its location. It sits at the intersection of Suárez and Reyes streets in Montevideo’s Prado neighborhood. The Montevideo Botanic Garden rests just behind it.

In 1907, Adelina Lerena de Fein bought this land at auction. The Fein Lerena family commissioned a three-story house. Young architect Juan María Aubriot completed it in 1908. It served as their family home.

After the family’s passing, the house was sold to Werner Quincke. Quincke hired architect Karl Trambauer. Trambauer added the building’s distinctive tower. Later, the Susviela Elejalde family acquired the home. Financial difficulties forced them to give it up to the Montevideo Municipality.

Fate intervened in 1925. Luis Batlle Berres and Matilde Ibáñez Tálice met while walking by this very house. They married soon after. In 1947, Luis Batlle Berres became President. His wife suggested making this mansion the official residence. Architect Juan Scasso renovated the building. He was also the architect of the Centenario Stadium.

Many presidents have called the Residencia Presidencial de Suárez y Reyes their home. Luis Batlle Berres was the first. Others include Andrés Martínez Trueba, Jorge Pacheco Areco, and Julio María Sanguinetti. Some presidents chose not to live here. Oscar Gestido, Tabaré Vázquez, and José Mujica preferred their private homes.

The Residencia Presidencial de Suárez y Reyes has welcomed many distinguished visitors. Luciano Pavarotti, King Juan Carlos I, and Pope John Paul II have all been guests. Charles de Gaulle, the French President, stayed here during a state visit in 1964. Inside, you can find a carpet. It was a gift from Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Marta Canessa, wife of President Julio María Sanguinetti, once said this. “The Residencia de Suárez y Reyes has the dignity of a house that represents the country. It also has the hierarchy of all the world’s presidencies. And it has an institutional sense.”

Today, the Residencia Presidencial de Suárez y Reyes stands as a symbol. It represents Uruguayan leadership. It blends architecture with the country’s ongoing story. It is more than a residence. It’s a landmark in Montevideo’s cultural landscape. The gardens, the history, and the stories within these walls make it a special place. A place where the past and present intertwine.
