Fifty years. That’s how long Dragør Skole Nord has graced this spot. It’s seen generations of children pass through its doors. It’s witnessed laughter, learning, and growth. Dragør Skole Nord, once known as Nordstrandskolen, opened its doors on August 13, 1973. Initially, it welcomed students from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades who were transferred from the overcrowded Store Magleby Skole. Can you imagine the excitement of those first students? A brand new school, ready for exploration. The need for Dragør Skole Nord arose from a boom in the local population during the 1960s. Store Magleby Skole, bursting at the seams with over 800 students crammed into 26 classrooms, couldn’t cope. Some classes even had to resort to using Hollænderhallen as a temporary “emergency school”. The decision to build Nordstrandskolen, as it was then called, came in 1968. The land, purchased from the Aldershvile farm for 475,000 kr, was situated between Kirkevej and Nordre Dragørvej. Dragør Skole Nord wasn’t built overnight. It evolved in stages, with extensions added over time, culminating in the official inauguration in March 1980. The total cost? A hefty 40 million kroner. Around 1990, declining student numbers led to discussions of closing Dragør Skole Nord. But the community rallied. Parents protested, and a political agreement ensured the survival of all four schools in the municipality. In 2011, Dragør Skole Nord and Dragør Skole (formerly Dragør Skole Syd) merged under a single leadership, becoming Dragør Skole Nord and Syd respectively. Remarkably, in 2011 and 2012, Dragør Skole, encompassing both Nord and Syd, earned the prestigious title of Denmark’s best elementary school. Today, Dragør Skole Nord stands as a testament to its rich history, a vibrant hub of learning, and a vital part of the Dragør community.
