Why would a mosque resemble a giant cube? Here at Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad, the unconventional design immediately sparks curiosity. Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a modern marvel, a testament to innovative architecture, and a tribute to Islamic tradition. Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad, designed by Indonesian architect Ridwan Kamil, opened its doors in 2010. The mosque challenges conventional mosque architecture, which typically features domes. Instead, it’s a striking cube inspired by the Kaaba in Mecca. The square shape isn’t the only connection to the holy city. The circular patterns on the building’s exterior subtly echo the tawaf, the circumambulation ritual performed during pilgrimage. The most captivating feature of Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad is the unique calligraphy. The walls are composed of a lattice of bricks. These bricks form the shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith, in giant Arabic script. This intricate design serves a dual purpose. During the day, sunlight filters through, casting a patterned light within. At night, the light from inside illuminates the shahada, creating a beacon of faith visible from afar. Inside Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad, 99 box-shaped lights adorn the ceiling. Each box features an inscription of one of the 99 names of Allah, known as the Asma ul Husna. When these lights are illuminated, they create a breathtaking display of reverence and beauty. Another remarkable aspect of Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad is its open-air mihrab, the niche indicating the direction of prayer. This mihrab offers a direct view of the surrounding natural beauty. It serves as a constant reminder of God’s creation. A large, round stone inscribed with the word “Allah” is positioned within the mihrab. This stone prevents people from walking in front of the imam during prayer. The integration of nature into the design further enhances the spiritual experience at Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad. The open-air mihrab provides a connection to the natural world. This connection encourages worshippers to reflect on the grandeur of creation and their place within it. Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad’s innovative design has earned it international acclaim. It was recognized as one of the top five “Building of the Year 2010” by the National Frame Building Association. It also received the FuturArc Green Leadership Award 2011 for its environmentally conscious design. Masjid Jami’ Al Irsyad stands as a symbol of architectural ingenuity and spiritual significance. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity, where faith is expressed through art.
