Established in 1996 Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa stands proudly in Manurewa South Auckland. This kura provides Maori medium education for students in years one to eight. It’s a place where the sounds of te reo Maori fill the air a vibrant tapestry woven from the rich threads of Maori culture and learning.
Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa wasn’t built overnight. It was established by the Nga Whare Akonga Kotahitanga Trust. This trust owns the land and the buildings themselves. The kura has faced many challenges and changes since its inception. These include significant changes in staffing and leadership. A new principal was appointed. A new teaching team joined too. The kura’s vision is to create a learning environment built on aroha manaaki tiaki and whakamana. These are values of love respect care and empowerment. These are the foundations of this special place.
The Education Review Office ERO has visited Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa several times. Their reports highlight both the successes and the areas needing improvement. Student achievement has been a focus. The kura has strived to improve outcomes especially for years seven and eight. The kura introduced a hybrid learning model. It was deemed exemplary and shared with other Auckland schools. This was especially important during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The school kept learning going even during challenging times.
However ERO reports also mention serious health and safety issues. The state of the buildings has raised concerns. The board of trustees is working hard to address these concerns. They are committed to ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. They are receiving training and support. Their goal is to strengthen their governance practices and improve internal evaluation. The well-being and success of the students are at the forefront of all decisions.
Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa is more than just a school. It is a community a place of learning and growth. It is a place where the past present and future intertwine. The children learning here are the future leaders of their communities. They will carry the legacy of Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa forward. They are nurtured to achieve success and embrace their cultural heritage. The vibrant energy of this special place is felt by all who visit. This is a true testament to the dedication and commitment of the staff whanau and the board of trustees. They continue to navigate challenges while striving for excellence. They strive to make Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa a beacon of Maori education in South Auckland.
