Let’s start with a quick geography lesson. Tököl sits at coordinates 47.32030 N latitude and 18.96711 E longitude. Covering 38.49 square kilometers, Tököl houses a population of about 10,200 people. This information is current as of recent data. The time zone here is Central European Time. So you will know if you are on time.

Did you know Tököl has a diverse population? The majority are Hungarians. However, there is a Croatian minority known as Bunjevci or Raci. This blend enriches Tököl’s cultural tapestry. You can see the blending and mixing of these cultures throughout the town.

During World War II, a significant airfield emerged in Budapest-Tököl. This airfield later became a Soviet military base. An important event unfolded during the Hungarian Uprising. Pál Maléter, then Defence Minister, negotiated with the Soviet military. Sadly, he was arrested during these talks.

After the war, Tököl’s airfield played a vital role in Hungarian aviation history. In 1952, fighter regiments of the Hungarian Air Force were stationed here. The Tököl air base of the Hungarian People’s Army was officially established in 1953. An aircraft repair company also operated at the airport. It later separated from Csepel Autógyár National Vállalat. It became the Pestvidéki Machine Factory. This factory specialized in military aircraft repair. Even after the Warsaw Pact dissolved, the factory continued repairing helicopters.

Tököl is not just about military history. It is also a living town with connections to the world. Tököl is twinned with Klein Rönnau in Germany. This connection fosters cultural exchange. It also promotes friendship between the two communities.

Two notable residents have called Tököl home. Pál Hoffman, a politician, contributed to the town’s governance. István Szilágyi, a handball player, brought sports fame to Tököl.

As you explore Tököl, remember its layers of history. The town’s story stretches from its diverse population to its military past. Tököl stands as a testament to Hungary’s dynamic history.
