Behold the Giant Sex Hamburger Mural. Its audaciousness is undeniable. Right here in Melbourne this twenty-foot tall artwork challenges our perceptions of art and public decency.
Commissioned for a Brunswick textiles factory the mural depicts a colossal hamburger. Within its juicy layers nestled amongst the patties lettuce cheese and pickles are dozens of copulating couples. Artist Mike Maka also known as Makatron created this provocative piece. He intended it as a commentary on how media uses sex to sell products particularly women’s bodies. He celebrated human diversity body shapes colors and tastes.
The reaction was immediate and intense. The Moreland council received complaints. They initially ordered its removal. The local media and an online petition protested. Many argued that the public was mature enough to handle the artwork’s slight suggestion of sexual behavior especially when so skillfully hidden within a beautiful juicy burger.
The ensuing public outcry forced the council to reconsider. Instead of complete removal they requested edits. Mayor Meghan Hopper stated that while art is subjective some parts crossed the line. Makatron though initially unhappy agreed to compromise. He planned to add more lettuce and cheese to tone down the explicit content.
The Giant Sex Hamburger Mural remains. It stands as a testament to artistic expression the power of public opinion and the blurry lines between art and censorship. It’s a conversation starter a reminder that even a hamburger can be a canvas for bold social commentary. Even with the added lettuce and cheese the mural continues to stir debate. It’s a delicious and controversial piece of Melbourne’s artistic landscape. A truly unforgettable sight.
