Hidden in the heart of the Netherlands lies Aalbeek. Aalbeek is not just a hamlet. It’s a winding ribbon of history. Approximately 115 houses and farms nestle in a dry valley. Surrounding Aalbeek are agricultural areas horticultural areas and nature.
Aalbeek’s story begins long ago. The first mention of Aalbeek was in 1324 as Oelbeek. This means low-lying land a damp place. Imagine the landscape then.
The seventeenth century saw the rise of the Aalbeek estate. This became the country residence of Andre Charles Membrede. He was once speaker of the House of Representatives. The mansion was demolished in 1911. A Jesuit monastery replaced it only to be demolished itself in 1992. The coach house remains. It’s now known as Villa Aalbeek. Eight modern villas surround it.
Aalbeek’s history includes a unique administrative quirk. Until 1982 Aalbeek belonged to two municipalities. Most of it was in Hulsberg some farms in Wijnandsrade. In 2019 another reorganization occurred. Aalbeek now belongs to Beekdaelen.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Aalbeek is its claim. Aalbeek is the center of the world. Mayor Chris Rutten of Nuth placed a column near Villa Aalbeek. It bears the Latin inscription Aalbeek centrum orbis. Rutten’s reasoning was simple. Aalbeek is located in the middle of Nuth. Nuth occupies a central position in South Limburg. South Limburg was in the heart of the EEC and Western Europe. Therefore Aalbeek is the center of the Old World.
Aalbeek boasts several sights. There is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. It is a devotional chapel dating from 1952. Another sight is the Maria Chapel from 1935. The farmhouses also tell a story. Haasdallerweg 1 is a closed farm with a 17th-century core. Aalbekerweg 85-89 has an 18th-century core. These structures whisper tales of generations past.
Notable figures have graced Aalbeek. Jan Gerard Kerkherdere a theologian and philologist lived here. Andre Charles Membrede the Dutch politician also called Aalbeek home. Robert Noortman an art dealer and Sef Vergoossen a football trainer. These individuals each added a unique chapter to Aalbeek’s vibrant history.
Aalbeek may be small. Its history is rich and complex. Its story unfolds in the architecture the landscape and the lives of its people. It’s a place to ponder the past and perhaps even the future. Aalbeek the center of the world? Perhaps it is. At least in the hearts of those who know its story.
