Picture the scene: a charming inn nestled amidst the serene beauty of Jægersborg Forest. This is Raadvad Kro. Its history is as rich and layered as the forest itself.
Raadvad Kro isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a living testament to centuries of history. It began life not as an inn but as a bustling hub of industry. Back in 1643 a watermill was built. This was just the beginning of Raadvad’s story. This mill was later destroyed only to be rebuilt as a gunpowder mill. Can you imagine the atmosphere? The smell of gunpowder clinging to the very air?
The mill and surrounding buildings became Raadvad Knivfabrik a renowned knife factory. The factory experienced hard times. Raadvad Kro opened in 1861 to bolster the factory’s income. It was a stroke of genius. Its proximity to Copenhagen and idyllic setting proved irresistible. Royalty even dined here!
The inn enjoyed great success. But the opening of the Coast Line in 1916 changed everything. People began to travel further afield. Raadvad Kro temporarily closed. It served as headquarters for the knife factory for a time. It later reopened as an inn in 1930. It has remained a beloved establishment ever since.
Today Raadvad Kro retains its old-world charm. It offers modern dining in historical surroundings. The inn’s cozy living rooms invite you to relax and savour its nuanced menu. Peter Steen and Rikke Kold Black the innkeepers draw inspiration from the surrounding nature and changing seasons. They have created a unique culinary experience.
Walk through the doors of Raadvad Kro. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. Imagine the stories whispered within these walls. From gunpowder to knives to gourmet meals Raadvad Kro has witnessed it all. This is more than just a restaurant. It’s a journey through time. A taste of history in the heart of the forest.
