Whispers of a bygone era echo here at Krepuska Géza-telep. This XVIII district in Budapest holds a story tied to a man of science and legacy. Let’s uncover the tale of Krepuska Géza-telep.

Krepuska Géza-telep wasn’t always its current name. Until 2012 it was known as the Alacskai úti lakótelep. The name change honors Dr. Géza Krepuska a renowned ear specialist. He significantly contributed to Hungarian medicine.

But who was Krepuska Géza? Born in 1861 Krepuska became a university professor. He founded Hungarian ear surgery. His father worked on a farm in Szent Lőrinc. Krepuska’s impact extends beyond medicine. He also helped Hungarian viniculture.

Imagine this area in the late 19th century. Krepuska established an experimental vineyard on his estate. He naturalized sand species. This aided the state of Hungarian viniculture. In 1899 he built a two-story building with a cellar. It served to keep and process wine.

Krepuska’s medical career was equally impressive. He worked at István and János Hospital. Later he managed the Otology Faculty of the Rókus Hospital. He lectured until 1936 passing on his knowledge. His comprehensive book Otology was published that same year. It contained 357 pages and 2219 pictures.

The Krepuska Géza-telep itself emerged much later. The housing estate was built between 1988 and 1991. The area adopted the name Krepuska Géza-telep in 2012. This was during a year-long memorial. The city expanded the district boundaries. This encompassed the land of Krepuska’s former estate.

Krepuska’s legacy lives on in Budapest. An annual vintage festival celebrates him. A street bears his name. A tablet commemorates his contributions.

In 2001 Krepuska Géza-telep housed 2083 residents. It forms a part of Budapest’s XVIII district. The district itself has seen much change. In 1900 very few people lived in the area. Mass influx of residents started in the 1890s. The population grew steadily until 1920. From the 1920s the population increased rapidly until the 1970s. Only World War II interrupted population growth.

Krepuska’s life ended in 1949. He was buried at the Graveyard in Fiume Street. His contributions continue to resonate. The Krepuska Géza-telep stands as a reminder. It is a tribute to a man who shaped medicine and agriculture. It is a place where history and community intertwine.
