“Is this where the City on a Hill Church meets?” a wide-eyed tourist might ask, standing right here on Edina Road. You’d be close, my friend, but not quite! This, my friends, is Hills Church. While it might share a similar vision to be a beacon of hope, Hills Church has its own unique story. Back in 2007, a small group of believers envisioned a church that reflected the light of Christ for the good of Melbourne. It all started with humble beginnings, a bible study group huddled in a city apartment. Then, in October of that same year, they took a bold step and held their first public service, not in a grand church building, but in a pub in Melbourne’s Docklands. From those fledgling days, Hills Church has grown, holding true to its mission to be a “city on a hill,” a shining example of God’s love and grace in the heart of Ferntree Gully. Every Sunday, the doors of Hills Church open, welcoming people from all walks of life to experience the beauty, truth, and relevance of Jesus Christ. So, the next time you find yourself wondering about the churches of Melbourne, remember Hills Church. It’s a place where a small spark of faith ignited a movement, a testament to the power of community and the never-ending story of God’s love.
