Wandering through time, imagine the whispers echoing from this very spot where the Fishmongers Almshouses Plaque stands. It marks a place of significant history. We are standing before a memorial plaque. It commemorates the Fishmongers Almshouses. These almshouses had a rich story. It all started with a vision to care for the elderly.

The Fishmongers’ Company, incorporated in 1272, played a role in London’s fish trade. They decided to provide housing for the poor. Sir Thomas Hunt gave the Fishmongers Company money in 1615. This was to establish almshouses. St Peter’s Hospital was founded in 1618. By 1824, it housed 42 people. James Hulbert, another Fishmonger, left a bequest. This allowed a second group of almshouses to be built in 1719.

Originally, the Fishmongers Almshouses stood at the Elephant and Castle. Bradshaw’s guide described them as a “quaint old pile”. They were built around 1633. Think about the lives of those who sought refuge here.

In 1851, the almshouses were moved to Wandsworth Common at a cost of £25,000. The original buildings at Elephant and Castle were replaced by the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Later, in 1923, the East Hill site was sold. Flats were built by the London County Council. These flats were replaced again in 1978.

This plaque reminds us of St Peter’s Hospital. The foundation stone was laid on June 22nd 1849. The site was considered airy. There were 42 houses plus a chapel, hall and library. Imagine a community within these walls. The buildings were demolished in 1923. Housing for the London County Council replaced them. The present development came in 1978.

Today, the Fishmongers Almshouses Plaque serves as a link to the past. It reminds us of the Fishmongers’ Company. It also reminds us of their commitment to the community. It marks the spot where compassion and care once stood. Let us remember the stories embedded in this place.
