Could a single voice echo through centuries? Here at the Bilal-i Habeşi Masjid in Tarsus, it seems so. This small, historic mosque whispers tales of Bilal ibn Rabah, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. The Bilal-i Habeşi Masjid isn’t grand in scale like some of Istanbul’s imperial mosques, but its story is powerful. Built in the 16th century, it commemorates a much earlier visit. Tradition says Bilal ibn Rabah himself came to this very spot during the caliphate of Umar, sometime between 634 and 644 AD. He raised his voice in prayer, and the resonance of that act led to the foundation named in his honor in 1519, and ultimately this mosque. The Bilal-i Habeşi Masjid is tucked between two other significant landmarks, the Grand Mosque of Tarsus and Saint Paul’s Church. The mosque itself is simple but elegant, a square structure topped by a single large dome. A narthex with three openings and three smaller domes extends out from the main building. Within the narthex rests a sarcophagus, a silent sentinel of time. The Bilal-i Habeşi Masjid offers a quiet space for reflection, a place to connect with the deep history of Islam in this region. It serves as a reminder that even small acts of faith can have a lasting impact, echoing down through generations. The story of Bilal ibn Rabah and this mosque illustrates how a single voice, raised in prayer, can resonate across centuries.
