From a modest beginning in a borrowed home, Hiroshima City Kōjinmachi Elementary School has witnessed a remarkable transformation. Established in 1873 as Kyōdō Seishin-kan, the school has borne several names throughout its 150-year history. Kōjinmachi Elementary, as it stands today, has played a vital role in educating generations of Hiroshima’s children. Originally located in present-day Kujibashi-cho, Minami Ward, the school eventually found its current home in Nishifuruichi-cho in 1944. Kōjinmachi Elementary was not immune to the devastating effects of the atomic bomb. The bombing in 1945 completely destroyed the school building. Reconstruction began with six wooden classrooms in 1955 and continued in phases. School lunches were introduced in 1958. The school has also served as a hub for special support education. Its dedicated Kotoba-to-Kiki no Kyōshitsu (Language and Hearing Classroom), established in 2003, further underscores its commitment to inclusive education. Kōjinmachi Elementary is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to Hiroshima’s resilience and its dedication to education. The school embodies the spirit of yokukangae, yashii kokoro de, genki ni hikaru (Think well, with a kind heart, and shine brightly). This motto resonates through the school’s vibrant atmosphere and its close ties to the community.
