Feel the gentle sway beneath you. This is the Nautical Swing. Commissioned by the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure in 2015 it’s more than just a swing.
The Nautical Swing is a remarkable piece of public art at the Coleman Bluff Overlook in San Francisco’s Hunters Point Shipyard. It’s a giant circular bench a park-bench-porch-swing hybrid. Up to a dozen people can relax here enjoying breathtaking views. The views stretch across the San Francisco Bay to Oakland.
Matthew Geller the artist behind this creation was inspired by the shipyard’s WWII-era structures. The design is cleverly crafted. The perforated steel canopy minimizes weight. It also provides a stunning view of the sky through a large oculus. The swing itself glides smoothly on four rods. This innovative design makes for a unique and unforgettable experience.
