Seeking solace and architectural marvel? Look no further than Waigong Catholic Church. Waigong Catholic Church, also known as Dong Jia Du Church, stands as a testament to Shanghai’s rich history. It intertwines architectural brilliance with spiritual significance. Let’s unravel the captivating story of this sacred landmark.

In 1847, amidst the bustling activity of old Shanghai, a vision took root. Ludovico Maria Besi, an Italian Jesuit, envisioned a church in the southern part of the city. This area, near the Dong family pier, would lend the church its local name: Dong Jia Du Church. Construction began, and after six years, Waigong Catholic Church emerged. Its consecration took place on May 15, 1853, during the Feast of Pentecost. The ceremony was led by Francesco Saverio Maresca. The church was dedicated to St. Francis Xavier.

Waigong Catholic Church quickly garnered renown for its stunning architecture. The Spanish Jesuit, Juan Ferrer, designed the basilica-style structure. The facade, an echo of the Holy Name of Jesus church in Rome, showcases an early Spanish Baroque style. Stepping inside reveals a contrasting Renaissance style. Visitors are greeted by arched roofs, sturdy pillars, and intricate lotus-designed bas-reliefs.

Waigong Catholic Church’s story continues through the tides of history. In 1946, with Shanghai’s elevation to a diocese, it became the city’s first cathedral. This marked a significant moment for the church and the city. Decades later, in 1993, the church received further recognition. It was designated a cultural relic of Shanghai, solidifying its place in the city’s heritage.

The church reached a milestone in 2003, celebrating its 150th anniversary. Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian presided over the liturgical celebration. More recently, in 2008, another chapter unfolded. The 400th anniversary of Catholicism’s arrival in Shanghai prompted a renovation project. Parish priest Joseph Lu, with Bishop Jin Luxian’s approval, entrusted the task to artists Francisco Arguello and Mattia Del Prette. Their work on the apse and presbytery showcased a Byzantine style of painting, adding another layer of artistic richness to the church. The renovated altarpiece was blessed in 2010, and the church reopened its doors in 2013.

Waigong Catholic Church’s story is one of architectural beauty, spiritual devotion, and historical significance. Its journey through time reflects the evolving landscape of Shanghai, making it a truly remarkable landmark.
