“Restricted Access” the sign declares. But beyond Pintu Minden lies a story of transformation and growth. Minden Entrance marks a transition. It bridges the residential area of Minden Heights and the academic world of Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Minden Heights got its name from the Minden Barracks. The British Army established the barracks in 1939. USM later took over the barracks. Now it forms part of the university.
Let’s go back in time. Imagine Dr Che Lah developing Minden Heights. He was a Penang Island Municipal Councillor. His vision created this housing estate. It borders the Universiti Sains Malaysia main campus. The neighbourhood saw completion in 1975. This was before the university’s medical school opened.
Minden Heights offers easy access to various locations. Georgetown is nearby. So are the Penang Bridge, Bayan Lepas Industrial Area, and Penang Airport. Rapid Penang buses serve Minden Heights. Routes 102, 301, 303, 304, and 401 stop along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. This road defines Minden Heights’ eastern boundary.
Now let’s talk about education. Universiti Sains Malaysia sits just south of Minden Heights. It is a top Malaysian public university. QS World University Rankings placed USM fifth in Malaysia in 2016. Two primary schools also operate within Minden Heights.
Consider Minden Gardens Residence. PPM Realty developed this housing project. It features 3-story terrace houses and semi-detached houses. It’s a gated community. Full perimeter fencing and a guard house secure the entrance. This ensures peace of mind for residents.
Minden Entrance allows passage to USM. USM started as Universiti Pulau Pinang in 1969. In 1971, it moved to its current site at Minden. The campus spans 416.6 hectares on Penang Island. It offers courses mainly in the Arts and Sciences. The Main Campus has always been regarded as a place to be seen. It is the gateway of superb educational experience location.
As we stand here at Minden Entrance remember its history. It connects community, education, and progress. It is more than just an entry point. It is a passage to the future.
