Ever wondered where the future protectors of our planet train? That place is right here at the School of Environmental Science & Engineering.
This school is not just a place of learning. It is a hub of innovation. The School of Environmental Science & Engineering is dedicated to tackling our planet’s pressing environmental challenges.
Donghua University established the College of Environmental Science and Engineering in 1999. However, the story began much earlier. The seeds were sown in the 1950s with the establishment of dyeing and weaving disciplines. In 1975, the Textile Chemical Engineering Department responded to textile wastewater pollution. They created the Three Wastes Teaching and Research Office. Professor Fang Borong was the first director.
A year later, in 1976, the office was renamed the Environmental Engineering Teaching and Research Office. That same year, the major of Environmental Engineering was established. By 1979, the program could confer Bachelor’s degrees. It became one of the first in China to establish environmental disciplines. In 1993, the Environmental Engineering Department was officially established. It combined several key research offices. In 1996, it gained the right to confer a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering.
The School of Environmental Science & Engineering comprises three departments. These are the Department of Environmental Science, the Department of Environmental Engineering, and the Department of Civil and Energy Engineering. The school also houses important research centers. Among them is the State Environmental Protection Engineering Centre for Pollution Treatment and Control in Textile Industry.
The college has two first-level disciplines. These are Environmental Science and Engineering and Civil Engineering. Environmental Engineering was listed as a key discipline in Shanghai in 2007. Environmental Science and Engineering became a first-class discipline in Shanghai universities in 2012.
Undergraduate training includes four majors. These are Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Built Environment and Energy Application engineering, and Energy and Environmental System Engineering. Environmental Engineering has passed the CEEAA engineering education certification four times.
The school boasts a strong faculty. More than 80% of teachers hold doctoral degrees. Over 60% have studied and researched abroad.
In recent years, the college has secured many awards. These include a national quality course and several Shanghai quality courses. The School of Environmental Science & Engineering has unique advantages. It excels in pollution control and resource utilization in the textile industry. It also leads in ventilation and energy conservation in industrial and civil buildings. Its research has significantly impacted the textile industry in coastal areas.
The college actively engages in international cooperation. It has programs with institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Hong Kong. As part of the Alliance of the Belt and Road for Environmental Deans, it promotes ecological and environmental protection.
The School of Environmental Science & Engineering continues to evolve. It adapts to meet new environmental challenges. The school fosters innovation. It shapes the next generation of environmental leaders. Their work ensures a greener future for all.
