Hidden in Lyon’s 9th arrondissement, Square Averroes is more than just a green space. It’s a tribute to a philosopher, a stage for modern life, and a whisper of history. Square Averroes occupies the space between Rue Schoelcher and the backs of buildings along Rue Edith Piaf, facing the École des Bleuets. A path separates the school grounds from the tranquility of the square. To the south, Square Averroes borders Rue Mouloudji. The square is relatively new. While the École des Bleuets was already active, and construction was underway on a building to the south, the square’s official opening came later. As of 2017, the square featured a raised walkway along Rue Schoelcher, overlooking a fountain with playful stone dolphins. A grassy expanse fills the center, surrounded by shrubs and a cluster of trees at the end of the southern path. Three large stone slabs face the lawn on the northern side. The square’s namesake, Abul Walid Mohamed Ibn Ruchd, known in the West as Averroes, was born in Cordoba in 1126 and died in Marrakech in 1198. He was a commentator on Aristotle, an inspiration for the European Renaissance, and one of the greatest Muslim thinkers of the Middle Ages. Even the CNRS and University Lyon 2 recognized his importance with a colloquium in 1999. The square is equipped with benches and stone tables, perfect for a casual lunch. In a nod to modern life, the Yellow Square building at number 3 housed fifteen companies as of 2020. Look around Square Averroes. You’ll find more than just greenery. A statue of an eagle stands proudly, alongside a stone engraved with symbols representing Averroes and his works. These artistic touches add another layer to the square’s story, blending the historical with the contemporary. Today, Square Averroes is a vibrant part of Lyon’s urban fabric. A place of quiet reflection, a playground, and a space for community.
