Question: What if I told you that within Lisbon lies a park born from coffee fortunes? That park is the Parque da Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases. It is a true escape from the city’s hustle.
The Parque da Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases is one of Lisbon’s largest green spaces. Only Parque Florestal de Monsanto and Parque da Bela Vista are bigger. This park tells a story of prosperous families and transformed landscapes.
The name “Quinta” hints at its past. “Quinta” means something like a French chateau or country house. Once, two grand quintas stood here. They were called Conchas and Lilases.
These quintas date back to the 16th century. They were owned by wealthy Portuguese families. These families traded in coffee. In 1966, the city of Lisbon took over the management of the quintas. For years, the land remained untouched. Finally, in 2005, the Parque da Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases opened to the public.
Francisco Mantero bought both quintas on February 25, 1899. He made his fortune with coffee plantations on São Tomé and Príncipe. Mantero remodeled Quinta dos Lilases. It mirrored the Portuguese colony at the time. The existing building became a colonial-style mansion. The lake got two wooded islands. These islands symbolized São Tomé and Príncipe.
Around the start of the 20th century, the mansion and fountain were built in Quinta das Conchas. The fountain, now dry, has an inscription dating back to 1916. Tobis Portuguesa, a film company, once owned part of the quinta. José Cottinelli Telmo filmed “A Canção de Lisboa” there in 1933.
Today, the Parque da Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases offers much to visitors. Quinta das Conchas has cafes, a restaurant, and sports areas. You can find fitness machines for exercise. Quinta dos Lilases features the colonial mansion.
If you are visiting Lisbon with children, this park is a must. There are playgrounds for different age groups. You can also find a Little Free Library.
The Parque da Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases is easily accessible. Just take the yellow metro to the Quinta das Conchas stop. From there, it is a short walk. The park is open from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Admission is free.
The Parque da Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases is more than just a park. It is a blend of history, nature, and recreation. A place where coffee fortunes shaped a landscape. A place where you can find peace and fun. The Parque da Quinta das Conchas e dos Lilases received the Valmor and Municipal Architecture Prize in 2005.
