Is this blue “V” familiar to anyone? This 30-foot-tall landmark here in Vandergriff Park has quite a history. It actually used to be perched atop the Vandergriff Chevrolet car dealership. For 30 years, that dealership stood at the corner of Collins and Division Streets. Today, this “V” serves as a reminder of the family who gave their name to this amazing park. Vandergriff Park is a sprawling green space, spanning over 100 acres right here in Arlington. It’s one of the biggest parks in the entire city, and it’s named after a family that truly shaped Arlington into the city it is today. Though not one of the founding families, the Vandergriffs have left an indelible mark on Arlington. Mayor Tom Vandergriff, who served from 1951 to 1977, was a true visionary. His leadership attracted major players like the General Motors Assembly Plant and Six Flags to Arlington. He also played a key role in bringing Lake Arlington and even the Texas Rangers to our city. His influence is still felt today, not just in this park, but throughout the city’s economy, entertainment, and tourism. Vandergriff Park isn’t just about the name though. Within its boundaries, you’ll find a whole range of activities for everyone. Baseball and softball fields are scattered throughout, and for those who prefer a different kind of swing, there are tennis courts too. The park boasts a refreshing swimming pool and a state-of-the-art skatepark. And let’s not forget the network of walking and biking trails for those who want to enjoy the outdoors at a more leisurely pace. Picnic areas and playgrounds provide the perfect setting for families to spend quality time together. This park is a tribute to the Vandergriff family and their commitment to making Arlington a vibrant and exciting city.
