Isn’t it fascinating how places of rest can tell such vibrant stories? Welcome to the Edgware Federation Cemetery. It is a testament to community, faith, and remembrance.

The Federation of Synagogues understands the importance of providing a final resting place. They established their Burial Society in 1889. Lord Samuel Montagu donated land in Edmonton for this purpose. The Edmonton Federation Cemetery holds nearly 40,000 graves. It is now at 98% capacity.

By World War II, the Jewish community expanded across London. New Federation congregations arose. The Federation needed more burial space. In 1936, they purchased 106 acres in Rainham, Essex. This became their second cemetery.

The Rainham Jewish Cemetery was consecrated in 1938. It has capacity for 45,000 to 50,000 graves. Currently, it is at 60% capacity.

Recognizing the growing communities in North West London, the Federation opened a new cemetery. This is the Edgware Federation Cemetery on Edgwarebury Lane. It serves Edgware, Borehamwood, and surrounding areas.

Planning permission for the Edgware Federation Cemetery faced challenges. The 11-acre site required approval from Barnet Council. It also needed sign-off from the Mayor of London. The Federation acquired the former Camden Sports and Social Club site in 2014. The land had been unused for almost 25 years. It was described as being in a deep state of neglect.

The Edgware Federation Cemetery is separate from an existing Jewish cemetery nearby. This other cemetery is jointly owned. The S and P Sephardi Community owns it. The West London Reform Synagogue, Liberal Judaism, and Belsize Square Synagogue also own it.

The Federation’s plans included buildings for prayer and preparation. There is a prayer hall for services. Tahara facilities prepare the deceased for burial. The site also features administration offices and workshops.

The Edgware Federation Cemetery marks a significant step. It is the Federation’s first new cemetery in almost 80 years. The cemetery has more than 7,000 burial plots. It ensures that the community’s needs are met. It offers a sacred space for remembrance.

The Edgware Federation Cemetery stands as a symbol. It embodies community, continuity, and respect for those who came before us. As we conclude our visit, consider the enduring power of memory. Think about the importance of preserving our stories for future generations.
