In the heart of Auckland, nestled amidst the vibrant energy of New Zealand’s largest city, lies Penrose. Penrose isn’t your typical tourist destination. It’s a place where the rhythm of industry beats strong, a testament to Auckland’s growth and evolution. Penrose, a suburb with a unique character, stands as a vital hub of commerce and activity. The history of Penrose stretches back to the 1830s. The Williams family, hailing from Cornwall, England, acquired the land from local Maori Chiefs. They christened it Penrose, a name echoing their homeland. This seemingly ordinary act marked the beginning of Penrose’s transformation. In the 1860s, the seeds of industry began to sprout. The construction of the Onehunga Line, one of New Zealand’s first government-funded railways, sliced through Penrose, connecting it to Auckland and Onehunga. This rail line proved to be a game-changer, laying the groundwork for Penrose’s industrial future. The 1920s witnessed Penrose blossoming into a bustling industrial center. Its strategic location, near the Great South Road and the railway line, attracted businesses. This industrial growth continued into the 1950s with the construction of State Highway 1. By this time, Penrose was a hive of activity, employing around 5,000 workers. Today, Penrose remains a predominantly industrial area, a mix of older, established sites and newer developments. Penrose boasts a unique demographic profile. Despite being an industrial hub, it’s home to a diverse community. As of June 2024, the population was approximately 1,150. Penrose also houses the former Penrose High School, now known as One Tree Hill College. The school, renamed in 2008 to shed its industrial image, attracts students from across Auckland, some traveling as far as 20 kilometers. Penrose, a place where the echoes of history intertwine with the hum of modern industry, offers a glimpse into the heart of Auckland’s working life.
