Is it possible for a building to whisper tales of merchants and cultural fusion? Here at Masjid Jami Kampung Baru Inpak, the stones themselves seem to speak. This is one of Jakarta’s oldest mosques. It stands as a testament to the city’s rich Islamic heritage.

Let’s journey back to the 18th century. Picture Batavia, as Jakarta was then known. Muslim merchants from India frequented this area. They needed a place to worship. Syeikh Abubakar, an Indian merchant residing here, initiated the construction. The Masjid Jami Kampung Baru Inpak began in 1743. It was completed in 1748.

Interestingly, a Dutch article from 1829 referred to it as the “Moorsche Tempel”. This translates to “Temple of the Moors”. The term “Moorish” often identified Indian Muslims. It’s a fascinating link to the diverse origins of those who built it. Though, remember, “Moorish” can also refer to North African Muslims who once ruled Andalusia.

Over time, the Masjid Jami Kampung Baru Inpak has seen changes. A flyover construction in the late 1980s caused damage. However, some original elements remain. Look closely. The keranka central square offers a glimpse into the past. Notice the carved setandan grapes. Some of the pillars on the windows whisper stories of the original design.

The mosque’s basic structure is a square. It features a pyramid-shaped roof overlap. This design mirrors traditional Javanese architecture. Typically, four soko guru pillars support such roofs.

The Masjid Jami Kampung Baru Inpak covers roughly 1,050 square meters. Imagine the floor covered in white head coverings. Green and red mats spread across it. An antique lamp hangs from the ceiling. This lamp has been there since the mosque’s earliest days.

Once, the mosque boasted a beautifully carved wooden pulpit. It was considered one of the most beautiful. Sadly, it was replaced. The original pulpit now resides in the Jakarta History Museum. That pulpit is a testament to the artistry that once graced this space.

The Masjid Jami Kampung Baru Inpak stands near Masjid Al-Anshor. It has been designated as a cultural heritage site by Jakarta’s government. This recognition protects its legacy. It ensures that its stories continue to be told. As you stand here, remember the merchants who prayed here. Remember the blend of cultures that shaped this sacred space. The Masjid Jami Kampung Baru Inpak is more than just a building. It is a living piece of Jakarta’s history.
