Established in 1865 Bowie State University stands proudly as Maryland’s oldest historically Black university. A testament to perseverance it began as the Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers. Imagine the dedication of those early educators and students. They faced immense challenges. They sought knowledge and opportunity in a society that often denied them both.

Bowie State University wasn’t always located here in Prince George’s County. Its journey began in Baltimore. It occupied space at the African Baptist Church before securing its own building. The university’s early years were defined by its commitment to teacher training. It provided essential education for African American students. Many of whom would become teachers themselves. This instilled a legacy of educational empowerment.

The move to this 338 1/2 acre campus in 1910 marked a significant expansion. The transition from a city setting to this suburban location allowed for growth. It paved the way for a wider range of academic programs. The name changed over time reflecting its evolving mission. It went from Baltimore Normal School to Maryland Normal and Industrial School at Bowie. It eventually became Bowie State College and finally Bowie State University in 1988.

Today Bowie State University offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs. It boasts a thriving campus life. It provides students with a strong foundation for success in various fields. The university’s commitment to STEM fields is particularly noteworthy. It’s a testament to its forward-thinking approach to education. The impressive Fine and Performing Arts Center showcases the university’s commitment to the arts. It replaced the former Martin Luther King Jr Arts Center.

In 2020 MacKenzie Scott’s generous donation of $25 million marked a pivotal moment. It was the largest single gift in the university’s history. This investment reflects the profound impact Bowie State has had on countless individuals and communities. This university isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a living testament to hope perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. Bowie State University continues to shape leaders and innovators. It empowers generations to come.
