“Their new parish, formerly part of Emerald Hill”. That intriguing fact refers to the very spot where we’re standing, right in front of St Joseph’s Catholic Church. This church, tucked away in the heart of Port Melbourne, holds a captivating history that goes back to the late 19th century. The story of St Joseph’s begins in 1882 when the Carmelites, a Catholic religious order, established a new parish in this area. Their territory stretched from the Yarra River to Fitzroy Street in St Kilda. Initially, they held their services in St Joseph’s, Port Melbourne, a church that had opened its doors just a year earlier. The economic prosperity of the 1880s fueled their ambition, leading them to purchase land for future churches. They even established their first Priory on Beaconsfield Parade in 1886. St Joseph’s, however, wasn’t immune to hardship. A fire in 1889 tragically destroyed its schoolhouse, only to be replaced by a new hall later that year. Interestingly, the economic depression in the 1890s put the Carmelites in a financial bind. Despite fundraising efforts, they faced the threat of foreclosure. But the parishioners rallied, forming the ‘Guild of Ransomers of Our Lady’s Church’, and with the support of the National Bank, they managed to save the church from financial ruin. This event cemented the community’s commitment to St Joseph’s and its legacy in the years to come. As time passed, St Joseph’s Church in Port Melbourne and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middle Park were united as one parish in 2005, further strengthening their bond and continuing to serve as a beacon of faith and community in Melbourne.
