“A city within a city,” they called it. Right here, before you, stands River City. It’s not just an apartment building. River City is an architectural marvel, a testament to the vision of its creator, Bertrand Goldberg. He envisioned a self-contained world, a place where residents could live, work, and thrive without ever having to leave. You can see the echoes of this vision in the building’s unique design. Imagine, two serpentine towers rising from a four-story base, connected by a skylighted atrium known as River Road. Goldberg’s original plans were even grander. He dreamed of soaring skyscrapers, 72 stories high, clustered together and linked by skybridges. This ambitious project, however, was deemed too radical for the time. River City, as we see it today, is a scaled-down version of his original dream. Despite the compromise, it remains a remarkable feat of engineering. Look closely and you’ll see the building’s raw concrete structure, a signature element of Goldberg’s Brutalist style. While some might find it austere, others see a certain beauty in its stark simplicity. River City is a reminder that even in a city teeming with architectural wonders, there’s always room for something truly unique.
