Established in 1964 the British Columbia Institute of Technology or BCIT has grown into a leading polytechnic institute. BCIT stands as a beacon of practical education in Burnaby. It is not just a school. It is a launchpad for future innovators and skilled professionals.

BCIT started as the British Columbia Vocational School in 1960. The British Columbia Institute of Technology opened its Burnaby campus four years later. Initially there were only 498 students. Today BCIT boasts multiple campuses across Metro Vancouver. They include Aerospace Technology Campus. There is also the Marine Campus, Downtown Campus and Annacis Island Campus.

Do you know BCIT’s motto? It is “Quisque dominus summi”. This translates to “To each their highest attainment”. This reflects the institute’s commitment to helping students achieve their full potential.

BCIT’s Burnaby campus is its main hub. Here you will find modern facilities. They include a library, gym and advanced labs. This is where most full-time programs in construction, business and engineering take place.

BCIT’s Aerospace Technology Campus is near Vancouver International Airport. Here students train in aircraft maintenance and commercial piloting. The RBC Foundation Aviation Library houses a vast collection of aviation resources.

The Marine Campus in North Vancouver offers marine training programs. These include nautical sciences and marine engineering. This campus provides hands-on experience in the marine field.

BCIT’s Downtown Vancouver Campus focuses on business, media and computing programs. It accommodates the expansion of part-time studies. The campus provides accessible education to working professionals.

Located on Annacis Island BCIT’s campus trains heavy-duty mechanics and transport trailer mechanics. This campus ensures students are job-ready for the transportation industry.

BCIT distinguishes itself with its unique educational philosophy. It prioritizes hands-on experience over theoretical learning. BCIT students gain practical skills. These are directly applicable to their chosen professions. For example, the school has a radio station Evolution 107.9 FM. It also has an automated manufacturing robotics lab and a marine engine room simulator.

BCIT has a Technology Centre. It coordinates applied research. It also assists with technology transfer and commercialization. This center fosters innovation and collaboration between students and industry.

BCIT has received national accreditation for its engineering programs. This highlights the institute’s commitment to academic excellence.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology Student Association supports students. It is dedicated to their social and academic needs. “The Link” is BCIT’s student newspaper.

BCIT has over 170000 alumni. Many have become leaders in their fields.

As you stand here remember BCIT is more than just an institute. It is a community. BCIT shapes future leaders and drives innovation in British Columbia and beyond.
