Is it possible for a church to be both historic and progressive? At St. Mary’s Anglican in Kerrisdale, the answer is a resounding yes. St. Mary’s Anglican has graced this corner of Vancouver for over 112 years. Generations of families have found solace and community within its walls. But don’t let the age fool you. St. Mary’s Anglican is not stuck in the past. It embraces a progressive, inclusive approach to faith, welcoming everyone, regardless of where they are on their spiritual journey. The church thrives as “a community of communities,” drawing people from all corners of Greater Vancouver. They come together to worship, to serve those in need, and to strive for what Martin Luther King Jr. called “the beloved community.” This vision of a community free from poverty, hunger, and hate guides St. Mary’s Anglican’s outreach and mission. The church offers two distinct Sunday services. One at 9:15 am embraces a contemporary style. The other, at 11:15 am, follows a more traditional format. The St. Mary’s Kerrisdale Church Choir enhances both services. This choir, led by Brigid Coult, welcomes anyone who loves sacred music, regardless of their religious affiliation. They rehearse weekly and perform at special services throughout the year. The church’s stunning stained-glass windows tell a story of their own. Created by Gilroy Stained Glass, each window depicts a saint whose feast day falls within the month represented by that bay of windows. The windows not only beautify the space. They also connect to the lives and interests of the families who commissioned them, leaving a lasting legacy in glass and light. St. Mary’s Anglican believes in the power of stewardship. It encourages its members to see all of life as a gift from God and to give back generously, supporting the church’s many ministries. From fellowship opportunities to educational programs, outreach initiatives, and pastoral care, St. Mary’s Anglican plays a vital role in the Kerrisdale community. As you stand before St. Mary’s Anglican, you are not just looking at a building. You are witnessing the embodiment of a living faith, a place where history and progress intertwine, and where all are welcome to seek, serve, and celebrate the love of God.
