Step into the Botany Library a vibrant hub of knowledge and community. This isn’t just any library. It’s part of a network the largest public library system in the Southern Hemisphere. Auckland Libraries formed in 2010 a merger of seven individual library systems. Botany Library opened its doors in 2004. It joined a system that traces its roots back to 1880. The Auckland Free Public Library was born then. Imagine a city of only 27000 people. That’s how many people lived in Auckland when the library first opened. It held a modest collection of only 7000 books. A huge change from the millions of items Auckland Libraries now hold.

The library’s history intertwines with that of Auckland itself. Auckland City Libraries was one of the systems that joined the Auckland Libraries network. In 1887 Sir George Grey donated around 8000 books. This doubled the existing collection. A new building was constructed. It housed the entire Auckland public library collection. The Auckland Art Gallery now stands on that site. The library’s collections grew over the years. It went through many changes and developments. Many branches were added to the system over time.

Botany Library itself offers much more than just books. It’s a community space. It provides internet access. It hosts workshops and events. Think of cooking demonstrations. Think of craft workshops for all ages. The library supports local history. It offers resources to help residents explore their heritage. It’s also a place where children can find joy in reading. Botany Library offers a passport to knowledge. It reflects the rich history of Auckland Libraries. It is also a vital part of the community it serves.

Today Botany Library continues its important role. It stands as a testament to the power of learning. It’s a place for exploration discovery and community engagement. It’s a modern library. It maintains the heritage of a rich history of public libraries in Auckland.
