What happened at this unassuming spot back in 1896? We are standing before the Old Kit Cemetery Plaque. This plaque tells the tale of a community and its final resting place. The Old Kit Cemetery wasn’t always a cemetery. Its story began with a grieving family just passing through. They were caring for their ill child, but sadly, the child passed away in this very spot. The family, heartbroken, asked landowner David Chadwell Britain for a place to bury their child. Touched by their grief, Britain donated the land for a community cemetery. Today, the Old Kit Cemetery is the final resting place for many early settlers of Kit. Among them lies Isaac “Ike” Story, the postmaster who served when the town was still known as “Gorbet”. The cemetery reflects the area’s diverse past. Veterans from various wars, as well as French, German, and Belgian settlers, all rest here. The caretakers restrict burials to direct descendants of these early settlers. The Old Kit Cemetery stands as a solemn reminder of those who came before us, their lives woven into the fabric of this land. Their stories, though silent, echo through the ages. We only need to listen.

Is it possible for a place to hold so much history in just one acre? You might not think so,
