The story begins long ago in a small town called Manassas. It was a time after slavery. Many African Americans sought spiritual solace. A few dedicated individuals had a vision. They wanted a place to worship. They found strength in their shared faith. This faith empowered them to organize and build their church.
The American Baptist Home Missionary Society played a vital role. They sent a missionary Rev Marshall Downing Williams. He aided the early efforts of the church’s foundation. He worked alongside local people like Sister Dorinda Miles and Lydia. Brother William Jackson Brother Willis W Alexander Brother Jared Naylor and Brother Frank Gaskins also contributed. They met in the Old School House yard in July 1872. The First Baptist Church of Manassas was born from this humble beginning.
The first service was held on October 13 1872. Rev Williams served until illness forced him to retire. He passed away on May 17 1924. The church persevered. It secured its present site in 1905 thanks to a generous donation. It’s been a continuous journey of expansion and renewal. This church has grown from its small beginnings into a vibrant community.
