Created on February 9th 1959 the 8th Arrondissement is a vibrant tapestry woven from industrial roots and urban dreams. The 8th Arrondissement of Lyon is one of the city’s nine arrondissements. Today we explore the 8th Arrondissement.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the 18th and 19th centuries. Lyon expanded eastward across the Rhône. The 8th Arrondissement emerged. Factories replaced rural landscapes shaping the area’s identity.

Initially part of the 7th Arrondissement it gained independence. The 8th became known as a working-class and student area. In 2015 it housed 85000 residents over 667 hectares. The area is bordered by the 7th Arrondissement to the west. The 3rd Arrondissement lies to the north. Vénissieux and Bron border it to the south and east.

Many roads converge here. Avenue Berthelot and Cours Gambetta arrive from the Presqu’île. Avenue Mermoz extends from the eastern suburbs. Boulevard Pinel comes from the north. Boulevard des États-Unis stretches from Vénissieux.

The Château des Tournelles in Monplaisir was once a symbol. Jesuits used it as a country house cultivating fruits. The Henry family later divided the land creating Monplaisir and Sans-Souci. Sadly the château was partially destroyed in 1934 for industry.

The Lumière brothers established their first factory here in 1882. They invented cinema in 1895. Marius Berliet built cars and trucks during both World Wars. Later pharmaceutical companies and medicine research centers took root.

Edouard Herriot and Tony Garnier shaped the urban landscape. They launched the États-Unis neighborhood in the 1920s. This addressed factory growth and immigration. Low-cost housing anchored Lyon’s new working class. The rapid population growth spurred the creation of Mermoz in the 1960s. Louis Pradel continued Herriot’s vision.

The Musée Urbain Tony Garnier stands as a testament. Twenty-four renovated buildings display painted walls. They narrate the neighborhood’s history. The T4 tramway offers a green passage through the borough. Lime trees punctuate the line. This offers quick access to Part-Dieu.

Today the 8th Arrondissement offers diverse experiences. The 8th Arrondissement’s subdistricts offer tranquility. Mermoz and Sans-Souci attract students. Affordable housing meets convenient transportation.

The États-Unis neighborhood showcases Tony Garnier’s architectural concepts. The Cité Tony Garnier provided social accommodations. A remaining show-flat offers a glimpse into the 1930s. The Institut Lumière celebrates cinema history. It highlights the Lumière brothers’ legacy. The Villa Lumière nicknamed “La Chateau” was their family home.

The 8th Arrondissement continues to evolve. It blends industrial heritage with modern living. From factories to film the 8th Arrondissement reflects Lyon’s dynamic spirit.
