“In Freiheit dienen” These words echoed in my ears as I stood before the Hörsaalgebäude Offizierschule des Heeres. This imposing structure in Dresden’s Albertstadt is more than just a building. It’s a testament to German military history and training.

The Hörsaalgebäude is the central training facility for the German Army’s officers. It’s where future leaders are molded. The school’s history is rich. Its roots trace back to Prussian military reforms in 1810. Then officer training happened in Kriegsschulen. After World War II three Heeresoffizierschulen were established. One in Hannover one in Husum and one in Munich. These schools trained thousands of officers.

In 1974 the three schools merged into one. The new Offizierschule des Heeres was housed in Hannover. But in 1993 a decision changed everything. The school was slated to move to Dresden. Three years later a new building opened. It was the creation of architect Professor Friedrich. The new Hörsaalgebäude opened in the Albertstadt-Kaserne on September 14 1998. It’s a significant symbol of German reunification.

The building itself is impressive. Inside are numerous lecture halls. Each hall is led by a staff officer. These officers are responsible for the education of aspiring officers. They are supported by instructors in various fields. History law and sports are some examples.

The school’s curriculum is extensive. It covers tactics political education military law and history. It trains officers and staff officers in various roles. There are programs for reserve officers as well. The education extends even to civilian members of the Bundeswehr.

The school’s motto “In Freiheit dienen” is powerful. It emphasizes the importance of serving in freedom. The motto is borrowed from Theodor Fontane’s novel Graf Petöfy. It reflects the school’s commitment to fostering leadership and ethical values.

The Hörsaalgebäude has not been without controversy. It’s faced criticism for allegedly training individuals who later committed crimes. There was even a fire in 2009 that caused significant damage. Still it continues to produce leaders for the German Army. It stands as a vital center for officer training in the modern German military. The Hörsaalgebäude is a place of learning. It is also a place of remembrance and reflection. It’s a reminder of the complex history of the German military.
