What does it mean to be encompassed? To be protected, sheltered, even united. That’s exactly what you’ll find embodied in the Encompass Sculpture here in Greenwich. This bronze sphere isn’t just a random collection of figures. It represents the very soul of the Greenwich Hospital community. Created by Michael Speller, it comprises 210 individual figures. Each one depicts serving and retired personnel from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines who have been supported by the Greenwich Hospital, a Crown Charity. Look closely. Each figure is unique, molded and imprinted with objects and words. They tell personal stories of lives lived and places cherished. Notice how they seem to rise, forming a protective shield around the sphere? It culminates in a dome, a subtle nod to the architectural genius of Sir Christopher Wren, the visionary behind the Royal Naval College. The Encompass Sculpture isn’t just art. It’s a testament to service, resilience, and the unwavering support of a community.
