Is it just me or can you feel the weight of history here at the St. Luke Catholic Church Plaque? This unassuming marker tells a story that stretches back to the 1860s, long before Irving was even a town. Back then, Catholic services were held in private homes, a testament to the dedication of those early believers. In 1902, the Mission of St. Luke was formally established, finding a temporary home in the Lively School building. Imagine, parishioners loved their church so much that they actually took the seats from their buggies to use as pews on Sundays! When Irving was officially founded in 1903, the city’s founders donated land for churches, including one specifically for St. Luke Catholic Church. The first St. Luke Church, a simple white frame structure, was dedicated in 1904. This church served the community for years, eventually being sold to the Irving School District in 1928. A new, red brick church then rose on the corner of Iowa and 5th streets, incorporating the altar from the original church. It wasn’t until 1947 that St. Luke officially achieved parish status, finally welcoming its own resident pastor in 1948. The St. Luke Catholic Church we see today, the third iteration of this faithful community, was dedicated in 1954. The parish school and convent followed soon after, solidifying St. Luke’s place as a cornerstone of the Irving community. The St. Luke Catholic Church Plaque reminds us that faith and dedication can build more than just buildings, it can build a legacy.
