Hadley Wood Golf Club opened in 1922. It sits within the grounds of Beech Hill Park. The associated stables are also listed buildings. The renowned Dr Alister MacKenzie designed this course. He is also the architect behind the famous Augusta National.
MacKenzie’s design philosophy shines through at Hadley Wood. He believed in two loops of nine holes. He wanted a good proportion of two-shot holes and at least four one-shot holes. He felt there should be little walking between holes.
Early matches at Hadley Wood featured golfing legends. Ray, Vardon, Duncan, and Smith all graced the course. Harry Vardon set the initial professional record with a 71. The original bogey score was 78. The course then measured 6539 yards.
Many original holes and green sites remain at Hadley Wood. The 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th holes showcase MacKenzie’s genius. That means 13 of 18 holes come from this great architect.
Clyde Johnson’s bunker work is a standout feature. His finesse and detail create a unique challenge. The bunkers on the 2nd and 9th holes show his skill.
