Before you stands the Kriegsstrasse a street steeped in history. It’s more than just a road. It’s a living timeline of Karlsruhe. For centuries it has witnessed the city’s growth and change. From humble beginnings to its present-day form the Kriegsstrasse bears silent witness.

The Hereditary Grand Ducal Palace stands majestically on this street. This isn’t just any palace. It houses the Federal Court of Justice. This building has witnessed pivotal moments in German history. Its walls have echoed with legal battles shaping the nation’s destiny.

Originally a Classicist garden palace it was built in 1817. Friedrich Weinbrenner a renowned architect designed it. It served as the residence of Grand Dukes. The palace underwent many transformations. War damaged it severely. The upper floors and roof domes were destroyed during the Second World War.

Following the war the palace was given to the Federal Court of Justice. The Court extended the building in the late 1990s. The historic gambrel roof was painstakingly reconstructed in 2012. This reflects the enduring significance of the palace and its role in German justice.

A marble plaque commemorates 34 judges and lawyers. They were from the Leipzig Reichsgericht and Reichsanwaltschaft. These individuals died in Soviet captivity after the end of Nazi rule. A later addition highlights the unjust Nazi system. Many of these lawyers were members of the Nazi party. This powerful memorial serves as a reminder of the complex history of justice.

The Kriegsstrasse also had a once beautiful garden. It was redesigned at the end of the 19th century. A cascade and fountain were prominent features. The car-friendly expansion of the Kriegsstrasse in 1970 destroyed most of the garden. The Galatea Fountain survives. It stands as a poignant reminder of what was lost. Though largely gone the remains of the garden continue to evolve.

Today the Kriegsstrasse is a major thoroughfare. It’s undergoing another massive transformation. A 1.6-kilometer-long car tunnel is being built. It will cost approximately 225 million euros and be completed by 2021. Construction has been ongoing for years. The changes are as profound as those that happened centuries ago. The Kriegsstrasse’s future is as rich as its past. This street continues to shape the heart of Karlsruhe.
