Hidden within the grounds of the Vésinet Hospital lies Cimetière de l’hôpital, a forgotten cemetery with a story waiting to be unearthed. Cimetière de l’hôpital is a place where time seems to stand still. Fallen crosses litter the ground, tombstones lie broken, and trees grow from the very graves. The epitaphs whisper tales of another era, like that of Henri Jahier, born July 17, 1926, and died August 13, 1926, “Regretted by his parents.” Cimetière de l’hôpital primarily served the patients and staff of the hospital. Back when it was known as “L’Asile,” the hospital housed convalescing workers. Between its inauguration in 1859 by the Duke of Padua and 1866, a staggering 27,000 women found rest in this secluded corner of Vésinet, before it was even recognized as a commune. During World War I, L’Asile served as an auxiliary hospital for wounded soldiers. This explains the presence of military personnel buried at Cimetière de l’hôpital, though many have since been exhumed. The exact number of those interred here remains a mystery. The Germans destroyed the hospital archives during the Occupation. Due to lack of resources, successive hospital directors gradually abandoned Cimetière de l’hôpital. This neglect led to its decay and made it a haunt for thrill-seeking youth. Cimetière de l’hôpital is more than just a forgotten cemetery. It is a poignant reminder of lives lived, losses mourned, and a history nearly erased. While plans exist to transform this space into a park, the echoes of those resting here deserve to be remembered.
