Isn’t it fascinating how architecture can be a powerful tool for social change? Right here, before us, stands Prince Consort’s Lodge, a testament to the progressive vision of Prince Albert. This unassuming two-story structure, now nestled peacefully in Kennington Park, has a remarkable past. It was originally showcased at the grand 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, not within the Crystal Palace’s walls, but outside, accessible to all. Prince Albert, president of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes, wanted to demonstrate affordable, well-designed housing for working families. Designed by Henry Roberts, Prince Consort’s Lodge featured four flats, two on each level, each equipped with a living room, three bedrooms, a scullery, and even a toilet, a rarity for working-class homes then. After the exhibition, the Lodge found its permanent home here in Kennington Park in 1852. It served a dual purpose: housing park attendants and a cottage museum. Look closely, and you’ll see “Model Houses for Families Erected by HRH Prince Albert” inscribed beneath the balcony. Prince Consort’s Lodge stands as a reminder of a time when social improvement was at the forefront of innovation and a testament to Prince Albert’s vision for a better future.
