In 1911, a seed of hope was planted on Chicago’s southwest side. That seed was St. Casimir Academy, the predecessor to Maria High School. Maria High School, a beacon of education for young women, officially opened its doors in 1952. The Sisters of St. Casimir built this larger school to meet the growing demand for their unique blend of academics and faith-based learning. Named for both their foundress, Mother Maria Kaupas, and the Blessed Mother, Maria High School quickly became a cornerstone of the community. Mother Maria, born in Lithuania in 1880, immigrated to the United States and dedicated her life to education and service. Her vision shaped Maria High School’s mission to empower young women to make a difference in the world. Imagine the hallways of Maria High School filled with students in their distinctive uniforms. From the early 1950s navy blue skirts and bolero jackets to the later brown skirts and colorful blouses, these uniforms marked a sense of belonging and tradition. Throughout its history, Maria High School provided a rigorous academic experience. The school offered Advanced Placement courses, preparing students for college and beyond. Extracurricular activities like the Maria Herald staff, Math & Science Club, and Mystic Ministry enriched student life. Sports played a significant role, with the softball team reaching the Elite 8 round in the state’s large school division in the 1995-96 season. The legacy of Maria High School extends beyond its walls. The Sisters of St. Casimir also sponsored Holy Cross Hospital in 1928, continuing their commitment to serving the community. Despite its rich history, Maria High School faced declining enrollment and financial challenges in its later years. It closed its doors as a Catholic all-girls school in 2013. However, its legacy lives on. The building now houses Catalyst-Maria, a co-ed public charter school, continuing the tradition of education on this site. Maria High School stands as a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and a commitment to education.
