Journey with me along the Pilgerweg Ochtum, Marsch & Moor a path that weaves through landscapes and connects communities. This ecumenical project unites several church parishes. These parishes include Hasbergen, Schönewoor and Altenesch. Also Bardewisch, Rablinghausen, Dietrich-Bonhoeffer, Stenum and Lemwerder are part of the project.
It began with open-air ecumenical services held on Ascension Day. These services took place on local farms. The experience showed many sought encounters with God. These encounters happened in churches and in nature. This led to the creation of landscape crosses. Because most people arrived by bike, the idea arose. The idea was to link these locations into a pilgrimage route.
A 30-person team worked for two years. They had support from regional businesses and institutions. They also received grants and donations. The 65 km Pilgerweg Ochtum, Marsch & Moor takes you through diverse landscapes. These include the southern Wesermarsch, the eastern Oldenburg district and the north of Delmenhorst. It also runs through western Bremen.
One notable station is the Steinkreuz or Stone Cross. Stenum means village with many stones. So St Michael’s Church chose a stone cross. A fitting stone was found. Two holes were drilled to attach the cross. The church grounds were prepared. Thus the new pilgrimage station was created.
The stone cross exudes power. It contrasts with an older stone. The cross is made of stainless steel. Its high gloss reflects God’s glory. The station was designed to be inviting. A fence marks the boundary. Plants adorn the edges. The ground was leveled for easy access. A bench offers a place for meditation. An information sign completes the station.
The Steinkreuz station was inaugurated on June 27, 2014. The Pilgerweg Ochtum, Marsch & Moor offers more than just a route. It gives you a chance to step out of everyday life. You can find beautiful places, connect with yourself and encounter God. You can record your journey in a pilgrim passport. Get it at the local parishes. Collect stamps at each station.
The path is well-marked for cyclists with a distinct logo. GPS tracks are also available. Churches along the way provide information. They also offer tours and guidance. As you journey, remember the words of the meditation. Go forth strengthened for your path. Filled with courage and strength. Walk upright. Know the ground beneath you supports you. Look around you. Others walk with you. You are not alone. Shape the new land with your ideas. Ideas that shine like stars. Feel God’s blessing surrounding you. Like a coat in winter. You are never without protection. May your journey on the Pilgerweg Ochtum, Marsch & Moor enrich your soul.
