Across the Danube, a unique borough beckons. Csepel, the 21st district of Budapest, stands alone on Csepel Island. Neither Buda nor Pest can claim it. This island district holds a captivating history. It boasts a population of around 85,000 residents. Csepel Island itself was once the personal domain of Árpád. He was a key figure in the Magyar migration to the region around the 10th century. During the Middle Ages, Hungarian royalty favored Csepel Island as a retreat. It even served as a wedding gift for future queens after 1484. Imagine the royal celebrations that must have graced these shores.

However, this idyllic setting faced turmoil. The Ottoman Turks destroyed the village and royal manor in the 16th century. Later, Serb refugees found solace here, escaping Ottoman-occupied Serbia. Prince Eugene of Savoy, who owned the island in the 18th century, revitalized Csepel. He invited German colonists to settle the land. Csepel gained independence as a municipality in 1742. The original village, situated in the present-day freeport area, met its demise in the great flood of 1838. A new village emerged on higher ground in what is now known as Ófalu or Old Village.

Csepel evolved into a bustling working-class borough. It housed numerous factories, including one that produced the renowned Csepel bicycle. The 21st district played a pivotal role in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. It served as the location of the fighters’ last stand in Budapest. Today, Csepel features a blend of housing estates and middle-class garden suburbs.

The 21st district offers many attractions. The Local History Museum of Csepel unveils the district’s past and its industrial heritage. The oldest statue in Budapest, the John of Nepomuk Statue, graces Szent Imre tér. Several churches dot the landscape. The Nativity of Mary Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church, and the Heart of Jesus Church stand as testaments to Csepel’s diverse religious history. The remnants of the once-mighty Manfred Weiss Steel and Metal Works (Csepel Works) offer a glimpse into its industrial prowess. For nature enthusiasts, the Tamariska Hill nature reserve provides a welcome escape. A 1.1 km nature trail winds through its protected landscape.

Csepel’s cultural scene thrives with venues like the Csepeli Munkásotthon and the Miklós Radnóti Community Center. Leisure options abound, from the Csepel Bath to the Katalin Fishing Lake and the Little Danube Coastal Promenade. The district even boasts a wind tunnel experience at Skyward. Those seeking a mental challenge can test their skills at the Trap Factory escape rooms. Csepel hosts vibrant events, including the Csepel Harvest Fun, the Hungaricum Festival, and the Csepel Beer Festival. From historical landmarks to modern entertainment, Csepel offers a unique blend of past and present.
