The First Presbyterian Church of Austin traces its roots back to the missionary work of Rev. Daniel Baker. In 1848, he recognized Austin’s spiritual needs and recommended establishing a Presbyterian presence. His son, William M. Baker, answered that call. In May 1850, William M. Baker founded the First Presbyterian Church of Austin. Among the first five members was Abner Cook, a master builder who would later construct the Texas Governor’s Mansion. Their initial sanctuary, a humble wooden structure on land donated by Cook, was completed in 1851. This marked a significant milestone for the burgeoning community. This downtown location served the congregation for over a century. In 1890, a stone sanctuary replaced the original wooden building. They continued to worship at the downtown site until 1960. Then, they relocated to Jackson Street in north central Austin. The church found its current home on Mesa Drive in 1978. During this transition, they preserved pieces of their history. They incorporated stained glass windows and the cornerstone from the 1890 sanctuary into the new building’s design.
