Araneta City has retail dining and entertainment options. Residential offices lodging and parking facilities are also nearby. Over one million people visit daily. This is due to the area’s close proximity to transport terminals.

Key structures within Araneta City include Gateway Mall and Araneta Coliseum. Also nearby are New Frontier Theater Ali Mall Farmers Market and Farmers Plaza. ACI Inc. owns the entire complex. They are also in charge of a redevelopment master plan.

The Araneta City redevelopment aims to transform the area into a garden city. Additional buildings shopping malls and high-rise facilities are planned. The completion is set for 2030.

Araneta City has a rich history. J. Amado Araneta purchased the land in 1952. His family’s mansion was destroyed during the Battle of Manila in 1945. The land’s elevation is 43 meters. This is the highest point of Metro Manila.

In 1953 Araneta purchased 4 hectares of land. He built his residence there. It became known as the Bahay na Puti White House. In 1955 Araneta bought the remaining 31 hectares. He envisioned a mixed-use area.

In 1956 Araneta sold a portion of the property to the Philippine National Bank. They set up a branch in the area. The first Aguinaldo Department Store also opened a branch.

Rapid development followed the opening of Araneta Coliseum in 1960. The area became a bustling hub. The first strip mall in the country was created. It had 147 stores along Aurora Boulevard.

Ali Mall SM Cubao and Fiesta Carnival were built. Plaza Fair New Frontier Theater and Rustan’s Superstore also appeared. National Book Store Superbranch COD Department Store and Matsuzakaya Department Store followed. Farmers Plaza and Farmer’s Market added to the area’s appeal.

The complex began losing momentum in the late 1980s. The Farmers Plaza fire and coups against Corazon Aquino created problems. The Araneta Group faced rising competition. Urban decay rising crime rates and low business opportunities emerged.

In 1996 the construction of MRT Line 3 presented a redevelopment opportunity. The Araneta Group proposed long-term development plans. A joint venture partnership with Ayala Land was considered but dropped.

A 20-year redevelopment project began in 1999. The Araneta Center Master Plan aimed to create an interconnected transit-oriented garden city. Connectivity green architecture and open spaces were priorities.

The first phase began in 2002 with the construction of Gateway Mall. Renovations of Araneta Coliseum and New Frontier Theater followed. Ali Mall SM Cubao Shopwise and Farmers Plaza were renovated. The Manhattan Gardens complex and Gateway Tower were constructed.
